“Everyone, get in positions!” Mikka shouted, now sitting in the commander’s chair overlooking the deck.
Everyone was already in their positions, however. Tor and Lor sat opposite sides of the deck, monitoring the different auxiliary weapons systems. Wins, of course, was at the (metaphorical) wheels, ready to zoom into piloting action the moment they reached the Zig System. Koin was looking over the technical readouts, with her repair gear ready in the likely case that something broke. Dr. Yammoh… was still in stasis, recovering from her concussion for an indeterminate period of time. Luminosa stood by Mikka’s chair and put her hand on the armrest.
“This is always my favorite part of each mission,” Luminosa said to Mikka.
“It’s really exciting, but it’s dreadful, all this anticipation,” Mikka replied. “Same with you, Wins, right?”
“What?” Wins snapped her head back to look at her commander. “I’m sorry, Commander, sir.” Wins was the exact opposite of scatterbrained, and whenever she focused on a task, that was exactly what she was going to do. Interrupting her as she prepared to pilot the ship out of the Warp Zone was probably a bad idea, now that Mikka thought of it…
Maenad’s pink sphere icon projected onto the main screen. “The Warp Zone is leaving in the minute, make your time.”
Mikka breathed in deeply, and held it in for as long as she could, and breathed out, pushing every bit of air out of her lungs.
Here they went.
The hazy blue around the ship disappeared, and the XSS Savior appeared in the Zig System.
There was no ongoing battle, nor was there a fleet waiting ready for them to join.
Only debris from destroyed battleships.
This was a graveyard.
